No contradiction in NPT commitment, backing India's UNSC bid: US

Washington: The Obama administration has said that there is no contradiction in its commitment to the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and endorsement of India, which is not a signatory to the accord, for permanent membership of the UN Security Council.

"There is absolutely no contradiction between that recognition and US commitment to the NPT," the State Department said in response to a question.

There has been no change in the US position regarding nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, it said. "President (Barack) Obama's April 2009 speech in Prague envisioned a world without nuclear weapons."

The United States and India share this vision and will continue to work together towards that goal, it said.

"India plays a significant and responsible role in the world today, and the UN Security Council should reflect the realities of the changed world of the 21st Century," the State Department said.

The remarks came when asked what was the US position regarding the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), India and Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and how can it reconcile that position with support for India becoming a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
