New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit
tonight asked people not to panic after five people were
exposed to radiation in the city, saying all efforts will be
made to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
"There is no need to panic. A team of scientists from
Bhaba Atomic Research Centre have inspected the area and I
hope they will suggest measures so that such incident does not
happen again," she said.
Five persons were injured including one seriously
when they came in contact with a radioactive substance in
a scrapyard in Mayapuri.
A senior official of the Environment Department said
Government was gathering details about the "radiation leak"
and will decide about future course of action based on the
findings.
Dikshit said "it is the responsibility of the civic
agency to keep the city clean."
Scientists from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
scoured the Mayapuri scrapyard for the past two days and by
forenoon today removed several pieces of radioactive material
and packed it in shielded containers.
Panic gripped the locality last night after news of a
radiation leak spread with five persons falling ill after
coming in contact with a "mysterious shining object" in
a scrap shop.Experts have identified the material as
Cobalt-60.
Scientists from the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre
(BARC) and Narora Atomic Power Station also scanned Mayapuri .
