Nod for changes in irrigation scheme guidelines

To help states having difficult terrains get benefit from centrally-sponsored irrigation schemes, the Government today approved modifying guidelines of the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP).

New Delhi: To help states having difficult
terrains get benefit from centrally-sponsored irrigation
schemes, the Government today approved modifying guidelines of
the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP).

The changes in the guidelines approved by the Cabinet
Committee on Infrastructure which met today include allowing
funding under AIBP for three projects in Karnataka and Punjab.

With this, one project in Karnataka and two in Punjab will
benefit under the Desert Development Programme.

The CCI also approved enhancement of the present cost
norms from Rs 1.5 lakh per hectare to Rs 2 lakh per hectare
for minor irrigation schemes for inclusion under AIBP.

Official sources said the modifications will help provide
AIBP assistance in a "more uniform manner" and implement minor
irrigation projects in difficult terrain through AIBP
assistance.

The AIBP was conceived in 1996 by the Centre to provide
financial assistance to states to complete various ongoing
projects to extend irrigation to more areas.
