New Delhi, July 04: Snowfall lashed the Kashmir valley on Saturday, while light to moderate showers were recorded at most places in north India bringing the mercury at a comfortable level in the region even as rains eluded Punjab and Haryana for the second consecutive day.
Snowfall in upper reaches and rains in plains brought down temperatures appreciably across the Kashmir valley.
The day temperature in Srinagar dipped to 20.6 degrees, seven degrees below normal, while night temperature also showed a downward trend here.
Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir was the coldest place as the minimum temperature dipped to 6.6 degrees.
Delhiites also witnessed sporadic rains at various
places which kept the mercury at a tolerable level in the
national capital.
Maximum temperature here settled at 36.7 degrees, one degree above normal, as compared to yesterday's 37.2 notches. Most parts of Rajasthan witnessed moderate showers during the past 24 hours with Jodhpur recording a maximum of 19.8 mm rainfall, followed by Bharatpur 7.2 mm.
While Barmer was the hottest place in the state at 42.4 degrees Celsius, Jaisalmer recorded a high of 41.2 degrees.
Pink city Jaipur remained hot at a high of 37 degrees, two notches above normal.
Light rains and thundershowers brought much needed respite for the people across Uttar Pradesh reeling under heat conditions.
Maximum rainfall (6 cm) was recorded at capital Lucknow, which registered a high of 33 degrees, followed by Kanpur division which received 5 cm rains. Fursatganj in Rae Bareli was the hottest place in the state at 38 degrees.
In the absence of monsoon rains, mercury rose by few notches in Punjab and Haryana with Hisar sweating it out at 41 degrees.
While Hisar in Haryana was hotter by four degrees above normal, Ambala registered a maximum of 37.4 degrees. In Punjab, holy city Amritsar recorded a high of 38.4 degrees, followed by Patiala at 38 degrees and Ludhiana at 36.7 notches with no possibility of rains in the next few days.
Mercury increased by five notches in Chandigarh, which settled at a maximum of 37.4 degrees.
Temperatures rose marginally in Shimla and other parts of Himachal Pradesh today in the absence of rain and snowfall.
The Capital city recorded a high of 25.7 degrees, one degree up from yesterday, while mercury climbed up by 2 to 3 notches in other parts of the hilly state.
