Oslo: An Indian couple in Norway has been remanded to custody over fear that they will evade prosecution by returning to India, a statement by Oslo Police Department said.

Chandrashekhar Vallabhaneni and his wife Anupama were arrested by Norway’s police on Monday for chiding their son.

The couple has been charged with 'gross/repeated maltreatment' of their child by threats, violence/other wrong doing, under Section 219 of Norwegian law, added reports.

The prosecution has reportedly proposed a sentence of 1 year and 3 months for the mother, and 1 year and 6 months for the father of the child.

The Court of Appeals is in process of hearing the defence's appeal and the judgment will be pronounced in Oslo District Court on December 03.

Indian authorities are making efforts to seek release of the couple. According to their family, an officer of the Indian embassy met Chandrashekar, who is in police custody, in Oslo on Friday and assured him full assistance. According to information reaching here, the officer collected all the details of the case and spoke to Chandrashekhar, an employee of software giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

The couple was arrested nine months after their seven-year-old child Sriram complained to his school teachers that his parents were threatening to send him back to India for wetting his pants.

Originally hailing from Krishna district in coastal Andhra, Chandrasekhar was sent to Oslo by his company last year to handle a project. The family returned home in July this year.

Chandrasekhar again left for Norway on November 23 for work. This time he went only with his wife leaving behind his both sons. A court in Oslo issued summons and later police arrested them.

Chandrasekhar's parents and other family members here were worried about the couple. They appealed to the state and the central government to intervene to seek their release.

According to the report, the child welfare authorities took Sriram for a month, but later returned him to his parents.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed Chief Secretary Minni Mathew to get in touch with the officials of the Ministry of External Affairs to seek the release of the couple.

There is a mistranslation here. they are not jailed for scolding their child (rebuke), they are jailed for SCALDING him (they burned him with hot water/hot scalding spoons all over his body.) This has been testified by physicians/medical experts. They also whipped him repetedly with a belt. Physical abuse is 100% illegal in Norway. All immigrants must submit to the laws in their host countries, this is not special for Norway.

The people who were arrested are Indian nationals and are in Norway for work and return only. The rules applied to any Indian in India only applies to them .Norway has no right to arrest the Indians ,but can deport them if needed. When they are dealing with their children in such ways ,and when they cannot produce skilled people to man their jobs, at least they should have brains to realise that the way India deals with children is the best. All religion s of the world that the chilren must be disciplined, and guided as required. If Norwat has such a rule they must have educated the Indian couple,or who ever enters Norway,as a foreigner of their rules, they have failed to do so.It is really a barbaric behavior of the country Norway to act like this.Indian Govt.must blacklist Norway and stop sending our people to that country..

It dosen`t matter what they are doing in Norway. As long as they flollow the rules. You can`t come to a country, comit a crime and go free.

Your points are absurd. Let`s reverse the situation: Should then every foreign visitor who enters India be given a course on Indian law paid by the Indian taxpayer? Nonsense. It is every entrant`s own responsibility to familiarize oneself with the laws of the land, and that applied to any country including India.

Burnig their children with hot spoons on different parts of their body, because they are bedwetters, IS criminal misconduct. Any person who defends this type of punishment is the real barbarian.

I read the article and the comments from different people. i was shocked after reading some comments asking the law to punish the parents. it looks silly no where in the article it is mention that the child was physically abused, nother only threatened to send back to India. if that is wrong then their is big mistake in the law and problem in the people`s mind who support the law.

The norwegian word for scalding is skolding, so it has been mistranslated. The child was scalded with boiling water and whipped with a belt. Medical experts testified and there was no doubt it was done deliberately, not as an accident.

Another painful news for all the people in the world in general & for Indian particular as Chandrashekhar Vallabhaneni and his wife Anupama were arrested by Norway’s police for chiding their son. Chiding/rebuking of children is being practiced in India as well as in many other countries from hundred years back for the welfare of the children. The people of these countries probably think God will take care if children are derailed. We all know about Bhattacharjee couple case in Norway and then in Ireland, a young woman (Savita) allowed to die in presence of Medical doctors citing country`s religious rule. By going through these type of news and after visiting some countries I always feel our India is really great. In fact many foreigners also were in the opinion that `India is really interesting & incredible country`. Many more years back one Bengali poet `Bhart abar jagat sabhaya shrestha asan lobe` meaning `India again will occupy highest position in the world`. I also think so as Indians whether Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikhs, Persian and all others are having broadness in mind. And that is why our rules and regulations are flexible and human development oriented. Hope couple will be released soon by Norway authorities.

Why is it that folks from Andhra get into trouble with authorities and citizens in other countries - Norway, USA, Australia, et al. Am I missing something here or is it the genes in the Krishna/Godavari belt that causes them to look foolish, act foolish and remain foolish despite multiple foolish incidents?

Its good this happened, no one has right to mistreat the child just because they are elder to him.

Absurd laws. The question is Who is going to reprimand the child ? Parents are first teachers and they have every right to bring up their child. This right cannot be usurped by any institution howsoever big it may be.

The articles fails to state the facts of the case: the parents are charged with scolding their six year old son and beating him with a belt. This is not ``reprimanding``, this is physical abuse. Now, they are innocent until proven guilty. However, I strongly disagree with those who sem to claim that foreign residents in a country should in any way stand above the laws of that country. Thiat is an absurd argument, which would render useless any legal system. I respect the laws of the countries I visit, and I expect the vice versa from any foreigner in Norway.
