New Delhi: A multi-city search was carried
out by the CBI in connection with its probe in the alleged
financial bungling in the multi-crore National Rural Health
The searches were carried out at 12 places including
Lucknow, Moradabad and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Ahmedabad
in Gujarat, official sources said.
The searches come three weeks after the agency registered
two cases and also booked former Chief Medical Officer of
Lucknow A K Shukla and former Deputy CMO Y S Sachan, who died
inside Lucknow district prison under mysterious circumstances.
The CBI claims to have found leads indicating huge
financial bungling allegedly committed by UP Health Department
officials in connivance with contractors, the sources said.
The CBI alleged in the FIRs that officials in-charge of
funds from the Centre under the NRHM allegedly acted hand-in-
glove with the contractors to create fraudulent reimbursement
bills in the names of hiring of vehicles and medicine
purchases to withdraw funds for personal gains, they said.
Besides Shukla and Sachan, the agency has accused
District Administrative Office C J Yadav and clerk P C Verma
alleged of cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery among other
charges under Prevention of Corruption Act, they said.
The Allahabad High Court on July 27 had directed the CBI
to probe the murders of the two CMOs and also irregularities
in implementation of the NRHM. Then Lucknow CMO Arya was shot
dead last October while his successor B P Singh was killed on
April 2. Sachan, who was a suspect and alleged conspirator in
Singh`s killing, was found dead under mysterious circumstances
inside Lucknow district jail on June 22. The CBI has already
registered cases of these murders.
Lucknow Police also suspect the role of Sachan in the
NRHM scam and were going to arrest him but he was found dead
in the jail a day before that. Police have already arrested
then CMO A K Shukla in the NRHM scam.
