On UPA-II`s 3rd anniv, PM accepts public anger against corruption Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Seeking to erase the image of policy paralysis, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday spoke of "difficult decisions" and "determined measures" to boost investment. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on the other hand observed that the mandate in the next polls will depend on the work done and not promises.

A touch of introspection on the part of two leaders was evident at a celebration to mark the third anniversary of UPA-II at the Prime Minister's residence where the highlight was the presence of Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav on the podium along with senior ministers and UPA constituent leaders.

Releasing 'The Report to the People' along with Gandhi, Singh said, "Difficult decisions have to be taken on both spending and revenue mobilisation. Both the Centre and states have to be fiscally responsible. We also have to remove implementation bottlenecks that are preventing large projects from getting off the ground."

He said, "Determined measures are needed to boost the climate for industrial investment, both domestic and foreign".

Despite "real achievements" of the last eight years, "there are uncertainties and a large unfinished agenda before us", he said.

To those who have been targeting his government for the past several months, the PM said, “I invite a constructive criticism of our performance.”

On the issue of corruption which has been plaguing the Congress-led-government at the Centre he accepted, “We know there is public anger on the issue of corruption.” "We are trying to ensure exemplary punishment to the guilty while ensuring that public servants feel secure in taking bonafide decisions in national interest," the Prime Minister said.

Outlining the achievements of the UPA-II’s third anniversary, the Prime Minister said that the “Indian economy grew at about seven percent in 2011-12 which is the highest in the world,” despite adverse international economic scenario. He also added that there were noted successes in agricultural sector. “Rural wages have increased and India has been declared polio free by international agencies and WHO.”

"Sustained high rates of growth during the UPA government's tenure have enabled us to pursue our agenda of inclusive and equitable growth," he said.

Turning to economic situation, Singh said difficult decisions have to be taken on both spending and revenue mobilisation as he underlined the need for both the Centre and states have to be "fiscally responsible".

However, when asked later to specify the tough decisions, Singh told reporters, "let us wait. Sometimes somethings will be obvious".

Manmohan Singh asked the state government to come together to fight the menace of corruption and accepted that “Naxalism is a big problem.”

Taking on the critics of his government, the PM said, “Some people have questioned the capabilities of India’s growth. We will prove our sceptics wrong.”

At the same time he also urged all political parties to “rise above partisan issues so that India can rise globally.”

Also speaking on the occasion, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said, “We have faced a lot of difficulties in the last one year.” Slamming the Opposition she said that though the Central government’s detractors were loud in their criticism, they on their part had been controlled in their reaction.

Gandhi reminded the government that the result of the next Lok Sabha elections will depend on the "nature of work done by us" and not the promises.

Asserting that India has been advancing on the growth map since UPA took charge, she said, "we are aware that only two years are left when we will be seeking a new mandate from the people."

Manmohan Singh’s government has been fighting a perception battle for several months now on the issue of corruption, policy paralysis and non-governance. The Centre has been in the line-of-fire by the Opposition and also its allies on a host of issues with many predicting that UPA-II will not last the full five year term.

The Prime Minister himself has been singled out for not being pro-active and being vocal enough on the many crisis faced by the country today.

We shall all be ashamed that our govt is celebrating the worst governance which we ever had. So many rapes, distress, murders, corruption is prevailing in front of govt and they are releasing the success report card. The govt. (all parties) has failed Anna, they have failed each citizen of people, everybody (each citizen of India) hates them and still they want to celebrate. How come our country can be great when my wife has fear of kidnapping when she drops my son at bus stop, when young women are getting raped & there is no fear of police, when there are poor old beggars looking for some food at each signal, when farmer who is giving tons of food to country but he himself sleeps without food, when there is no respect for military men & they keep dying of no reason, when media has no power to report fearlessly, when our politicians, bureaucrats & their family are most safe but common/poor man can die any day. I don`t know how this would change but sure about that a day would come where I will also lose my ethics and I fear what face I will show it to my Mother & God at that moment

The real question is - do we have an alternative to the incompetent and corrupt UPA? Unfortunately the answer is no. The alternatives are even more corruption and incompetency topped with communalism.

Dr Sahib, you, your govt & congress party have failed on all front. Corruption, population control have played havoc in one`s system. You all have no will power, guts, integrity, honesty & administrative/managerial capabilities to run the country. Nothing will move unless you give them DANDA.you are not interested in that. You are interested in Dinner parties to gather support from various parties in order to save your chair. A selfish reason & against the national interest. We would suggest hand over charge of running the govt MrT N Sheshan a former top beaurecrat or to former top defense brass. Alternatively, hand over the charge to the army chief for couple of years to administer the country and weed out the corruption. Remember,by taking out couple of drops from the ocean, you are not going to clean the entire water. Our country is already gone to dogs.

Niyas, You should know how difficult to manage the things when almost all others like bjp, communists, ramdev, anna, mamta are trying to pull the govt. In a family of 4, I can not manage myself when other 2 or 3 pull my legs. I appreciate that alongwith all the problems UPA 2 is still continuing & doing something.

Will India achieve the projected Target of G.D.P. , Industrial and Economy Growth at the time when there steep fall in the price of Rupee against Dollar . Prime Minister S Manmohan Singh has said that there is lot to be achieved and we have achieved to our expectations , India is heading towards Developing Country but Inflation is also at its peak upsetting the Common Man`s Homely Budget , The issue of corruption and scams have also effected the image of the Nation .

``India is heading towards Developing Country`` you are a day dreamer i guess, until there is honest ``System`` in place we will never become developed nation. If you don`t get what is ``System`` means look at other developed countries (for ex: Law and order) and satyamev jayate program u will understand where we are.
