New Delhi: The government will build one
lakh houses for paramilitary force personnel who are deployed
in harsh conditions across the country, Home Minister
P Chidambaram on Tuesday said.
"One of the most ambitious projects that we will be
undertaking is construction of one lakh housing units for
paramilitary forces in next few years," the Home Minister said
while receiving a cheque of Rs 2.5 crore from 'Idea Cellular'
for the cause of protective gear for police.
The Home Minister said police personnel across the
country are living in conditions which can be described as
"dehumanising", and there was a need to give respect to
policemen who are working in such conditions.
On the first anniversary of the audacious 26/11 terror
attacks, Aditya Birla Group's Idea Cellular had launched a
campaign in which the revenue generated from every call made
between 8.36 pm to 9.36 pm would be given to the cause of
protective gear for policemen.
The company generated Rs 1.25 crore from the calls,
which was doubled by the company and presented to the Home
Minister for the Prime Minister's National Defence Fund.
