New Delhi: Even as politicians of all hues closed ranks to dismiss the Anna Hazare phenomenon, the Gandhian is refusing to budge an inch from his position on the Lokpal Bill.
The 74-year-old is livid at the provisions of the Lokpal Bill presented by the government in the Lok Sabha and termed it as ‘weak’.
“Lokpal draft is wrong, it doesn’t represent the voice of the people,” Anna told reporters on Friday.
Anna also spoke on the various allegations being levelled against him. “People will decide what democracy is. I only want there should be no corrupt person in the country,” he said when asked about the allegation that he is weakening the parliamentary democracy of the country.
The CPI, which had shared the dais with Anna on December 11 when he went on a token fast at Jantar Mantar, had slammed him during discussions over the bill in Parliament yesterday.
When senior party leader Gurudas Dasgupta asked his fellow MPs “not to be afraid of anyone who pretends to be another father of the nation” there was a loud thumping of tables cutting across party lines, including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.
“Please do not be afraid of another phase of hunger strike. Please do not surrender the sovereignty of Parliament,” he said. “Let us not be afraid of anybody, least of all an ex-policeman, least of all an ex-bureaucrat, least of all someone who pretends to be another father of the nation. There is only one father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi.”
When prodded for a response on the issue, Anna smiled and said, “What he (Dasgupta) said is correct…there can be only one father of the nation.”
On Lalu’s direct attack on him yesterday in the Parliament, he said, “People know who is a babul…has he forgotton ghaas ki gadbad (fodder scam).”
