Over 10,000 soldiers quit Indian Army last year Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: In a worrying trend that puts a question mark on the preparedness of the Indian Army, over 10,000 soldiers opted for pre-mature retirement from the force last year.

The disclosure was made by Defence Minister AK Antony in Parliament on Monday.

According to the minister, 10,315 soldiers took pre-mature retirement in 2011, while in 2010 and 2009 the figure stood at 7,249 and 7,499, respectively.

Antony said better career opportunities could be one of the reasons behind jawans opting for pre-mature retirement at a productive age of around 35 years.

Regarding the growing cases of friction between soldiers and senior Army officers, Antony said in the last two years, there have three such incidents where officers and jawans have been involved in "scuffles" at different places including the 226 Field Regiment at Nyoma in Ladakh and 45th Cavalry at Gurdaspur in Punjab.

The Defence Minister said jawans are not subjected to "undue harassment" by officers and they perform their responsibilities in a "congenial atmosphere".

Antony said a number of steps including liberalised leave policy, provision of recreational facilities and deployment of psychological counsellors to keep up the morale of jawans.

Do you guys expect them to stay forever in the army with a salary of Rs 4000?The salary of the jawans should be increased to Rs 20000 at least. Everything is officer-oriented in the Indian army.Their salary is much better, they receive better services and are much respected. Also parents don`t like their children to enlist in the army as a soldier, but oblige at the decision to join NDA.Better services must be provided to the soldiers or this rate is only going upwards.

This is very unfortunate that our brave Combatant soldiers in our indian army attaching to senior officers for doing their personal work, from polishing his shoes, to maintaining his uniform, taking children to school, doing gardening and assisting the officers spouse in her chores.``

Its very sad to say that why Indian army jawans are leaving army.In most of cases jawans are being using by army officers for their personnel use.Army offr are ruling jawans like Britishers.Army offrs has forgotten that from where they are gdtting sallary.Every Indian is paying money for army, unfortunately these army offrs are waisting this money for their own use.I would like to give u a example that how army jawan is harrassing by army offr.most of offr use Jawan to look after their dog during his wifes morning walk.Totally i wish say that army is like a drama.offrs are kings and they can do whatever they wish.In such a war time these army offr need a helper otherwise they will be sick.Jai Hind.

Indian Army hasnt seen war since 1971, jawans -having served for 15 years are moving to greener pastures. If we have to retain them then we need to improve their service and pay conditions. The army is competing with the corporate world to retain services, its a loss to the govt to lose trained soldiers.

Compulsory military service at least for 3 years after graduation and on reaching of age 20 should be made mandatory in order to infuse new blood into army and to kindle patriotism among the youth. The govt may think over it and act to stem the trend.

The main deterrent in continuation in defence forces is frequent transfers & to be away from family & hence maintenance of 2 establishments& not the salary.
