Over 140 sentenced to death last year in the country

More than 140 people were sentenced to death for heinous crimes across the country last year but no execution has been carried out in the last three years, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

The highest number of death penalties were awarded in
Karnataka where 36 persons were given capital punishment
followed by Maharashtra (29), Madhya Pradesh (17), Uttar
Pradesh (15), Delhi (13), Minister of State for Home Affairs
Ajay Maken told the House.

The data for the year does not include figures from 10
states and Union Territories.

The figures presented by the Minister show that in last
three years, between 2006-08, a total of 456 death sentences
were awarded in the country but there has been no execution.

During the period highest number of death sentences were
awarded in Maharashtra where 78 people were awarded the
capital punishment followed by Uttar Pradesh (69), Karnataka
(63), Madhya Pradesh (48) and Delhi (5), as per the data
presented on the floor of the House.

Across the country 129 people were awarded death
sentence in 2006, 186 in 2007 and 141 in 2008, the figures
say.
