Ahmedabad: Unique Identification Authority of
India Chairman Nandan Nilekani on Tuesday said a committee under
the chairmanship of former CVC N Vittal has been set up to
standardise the data collected for issuing the numbers.
Hoping to issue 600 million UID numbers in the next five-
and-a-half years, the co-founder of IT firm Infosys also said,
"For this we need cooperation of all the agencies. What we are
doing is building the highways to collect information but the
actual traffic on the highways or speed depends on the
political will and desire of the agencies to collect
information."
In July, he had said that UIDAI would start issuing the
first set of UID numbers within 12-18 months.
Nilekani said the data collection by various agencies
involved would be a standard process which would be decided by
he Vittal committee.
"To standardise the data that would be collected we have
set up a Data Standard and Verification Committee chaired by N
Vittal, former Chief Vigilance commissioner. They are going to
come out with biometric and data verification standards in
next few weeks which will be uploaded on our website for
public scrutiny," he said on sidelines of a function
orgainsed by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (Gujarat Branch).
He said UIDAI has partnered with implementing authorities
of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the Registrar
General of India to collect authentic information from India.
Nilekani also said the number would help improve security.
