Puducherry: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar
on Saturday said people with courage, conviction and commitment to a
cause should enter the political arena for taking forward the
development agenda in the era of liberalisation.

"We need people with courage and conviction and
commitment to a cause to enter the political arena in order to
take forward the development agenda without undermining our
culture and heritage," she told a special session of
Puducherry Assembly.

Felicitating Chief Minister V Vaithilingam and Deputy
Speaker A V Sreedharan on completing 25 years as legislators
without break, she said in this context Puducherry presented a
classic example of "our ability to harmonise modernity with
tradition, thanks to the wisdom of its leaders and the
maturity of its people."

She handed citations to the Chief Minister and the Deputy
Speaker in appreciation of their dedicated service for
two-and-a-half decades as members of the House.

"In this era of competitive politics 25 years of
uninterrupted record as legislators is laudable and to remain
at the helm of affairs when this achievement is being
celebrated is even more commendable," Kumar said.

She credited the leaders for the success of Puducherry as
a "well-administered" territory, saying they understood the
pulse of the people and followed sound policies. She also
lauded the people of the Union Territory for being ever ready
to absorb the winds of change without disturbing continuity.

Vaithilingam and Sreedharan expressed their gratitude to
Kumar. The special session of the Assembly, which commenced
yesterday, was adjourned sine die after the felicitations.
