Thiruvananthapuram: In fresh troubles for
former CJI K G Balakrishnan, a petition was filed Wednesday in a
vigilance court seeking a probe into charges against his
family members while his son-in-law P V Sreenijan resigned
from Youth Congress amid charges of amassing wealth.
Admitting the petition filed by an NGO in the
vigilance court in Thrissur, judge V Jayaraman posted for
January 18 the case, in which Balakrishnan is the first
respondent, followed by his brother K G Bhaskaran and
Sreenijan.
The petition by George Vattakulam, president of
Malayala Vedi, pleaded for an inquiry by Vigilance and
Anti-Corruption Bureau into allegations of amassing of wealth
disproportionate to their known sources of income by Bhaskaran
and Sreenijan during Balakrishnan`s tenure as CJI.
Sreenijan, who is already facing a vigilance probe,
sent in his resignation from primary membership of the Youth
Congress to its state president, after he failed to get any
political support from the party which sought an explanation
from him.
According to sources, the issue figured prominently at
the meeting of the Youth Congress state committee where some
office bearers even demanded a CBI probe into the allegations
against the family members of Balakrishnan.
Sreenijan, a former state Youth Congress vice
president, had unsuccessfully contested the last assembly
polls on Congress ticket from Njarakkal segment in Erakulam
district.
Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, meanwhile, said his
government would also take action against Bhaskaran if any
complaint was received against him.
Facing charges of amassing wealth in Kerala and Tamil
Nadu, Bhaskaran had yesterday gone on medical leave after
Advocate General asked him to either quit as special
government pleader in the state high court or go on leave.
The issue also assumed political dimensions with
eminent jurist V R Krishna Iyer strongly resenting the silence
of the CPI-M leadership on the raging controversy.
"When there is duty to speak,I feel there is duty to
speak. Silence is guilt," the former Supreme Court judge told
reporters in Kochi.
Congress MP from Kannur, K Sudhakaran, alleged that
there had been an "unholy nexus" between Sreenijan and the
CPI-M, as the latter had "received his services". Sudhakaran
said this was why the CPI-M leadership was remaining silent
though some of its youth leaders had initially demanded
inquiry into the allegations.
