New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday condoled the death of former Union Minister Mahavir Prasad and described him as a nationalist, who contributed handsomely to the promotion of Hindi.

In a condolence message to the late Congress leader's daughter Vimla Devi, he said Prasad's life was one of commitment to the public good and he had served the country and people with hard work and dedication in various capacities.

Noting that Prasad taught for 34 years in the Department of Geography in Gandhi Inter College at Gorakhpur, the Prime Minister said the late leader also contributed handsomely to the promotion of Hindi.

"In the passing away of Prasad, we have lost a nationalist and a leader whose contribution to the cause of the underprivileged will be remembered for a very long time," he added.

Prasad, a former Haryana Governor, passed away here on Sunday last at the age of 71.
