New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has
constituted an informal group, headed by Mani Shankar Aiyar,
to consider how best to carry forward the ideas contained in
1988 Rajiv Gandhi action plan for a nuclear weapons-free world
and non-violent order.
Besides Aiyar, the eight-member group will have Amitabh
Mattoo (professor of Disarmament studies at JNU), A Gupta
(Director in Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis),
Manpreeet Sethi (Senior Research Fellow at Centre for Air
Power Studies), C Uday Bhaskar (Director of National Maritime
Foundation), Ambassadors Satish Chandra and Sairam Kumar (both
have served at IAEA) and journalist Siddharth Vardharajan.
The Rajiv Gandhi action plan urges all States to
participate in the process of nuclear disarmament to
demonstrate good faith and build the required confidence and
to bring about changes in doctrines, policies, and
institutions to sustain a world free of nuclear weapons.
Aiyar said "there is no deadline to submit the report but
we will try our best to submit an early report."
