New Delhi: Rejecting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement in the Parliament defending the action on Anna, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, said the government lacks the political will to fight corruption.

“Does the government have the political will to fight corruption? All you (Prime Minister) need is political will. You evolve that political will then you can fight corruption,” Jaitley said.

“You have unleashed a new political idiom against those who speak against this government. You use police power approach to solve a political problem.”

“Political spokespersons are being used as hitmen. Is that the level to which you have brought the political debate of this country? Arrogance of power has become the character of this government. The more arrogant you are the earlier it disappears,” he added.

Jaitley also stressed that that India is exasperated with corruption and the ways of this government.

Slamming the government for the action on Anna Hazare, Jaitley said, “The civil society is saying they will not substitute the Parliament. All that they are saying, and we are saying, is that they have the right to put their point across.”

“Every citizen has the right to crusade for his view. They have the right to say what they want to…their track record proves that they have been nonviolent,” he added.

This is not a fight a between citizen groups and India’s Parliament. We may agree to some of what they say and not agree to some of what that they say but they have the right to stress their pint of view, he added.
