PM misleading country, FDI decision indefensible: Opposition

New Delhi: Opposition on Friday night hit out at the Prime Minister over his address to the nation saying he was "misleading" the country on FDI in multi-brand retail and appeared to be advocating interests of other countries while trying to "defend the indefensible".

The ruling Congress, however, stoutly backed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that he has explained in detail why the government had to take the tough measures and it should be appreciated by all parties.

"In his speech, the Prime Minister tried to mislead the country. He appeared advocating the interests of foreign countries and not the Indians he leads," BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told PTI.

JD-U spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari alleged that the Prime Minister was trying to "spread confusion" in the country on the issue of economic reforms.

"Everybody knows that a major share of petrol and diesel is imported. But what steps has the government taken to bring down the consumption. He is accusing the Opposition of creating confusion on the issue but, in fact, Singh himself is doing so," Tiwari said.

Noting that a number of multi-national companies are already in retail, he asked as to "what work they have done so far to develop infrastructure in the country."

"To say that their arrival will improve the condition of farmers is absurd. This policy will create new set of middlemen," Tiwari said.

Left parties described the Prime Minister's rare televised address to the nation on the recent measures taken by the government as an attempt to "defend the indefensible" and questioned how can it take such decisions when it does not enjoy "overwhelming" majority in Parliament.

"The Prime Minister has sought to defend the indefensible steps taken by the government. The Prime Minister has not answered how he could proceed with these measures when it does not have the support of the overwhelming majority in Parliament," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told PTI.

On FDI in retail issue, Karat contended that it was well known that the entry of Walmart and other MNC chains will displace small shopkeepers and traders.

"Instead of regulating the existing organised retail trade, government wants to set up monopoly chains controlled by foreign companies," he said.

"Contrary to what he (PM) has said, the bulk of diesel is used by farmers irrigating their land and by trucks for transporting goods. This price increase will harm farmers and stoke inflation and high prices," Karat said.

CPI National Secretary D Raja described the address as a "very very desperate" bid by the Prime Minister to reach out to people.

He claimed Singh "miserably failed" to answer any questions raised by common man and parties.

Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi, however, dismissed the criticim. "The Prime Minister has explained each and everything as to why under the present circumstances, tough steps taken by the government were necessary. This should be appreciated by other parties," he said.

It is natural that the parties may be vocal against the policy-issues of the govt. but they do not place the alternative-guidelines.

``To oppose FDI and Price hike of diesel are policy of CPM and other parties like SP etc since beginning . The present disagreement with Govt. on these issues are according to their policy line and their views may be respected . But for BJP it is another example of hypocrisy and two-facedness. Last time they started swadesi movement to oppose FDI but when came in power they welcomed FDI in each field and increased Petrol/Diesel prices a dozen times. The BJP have no solution to any burning issues of this country ( either political issues or financial issues ). If they come in power they will not solve any problem only add a dozen of new problems.``

Who told BJP welcomed FDI? During their rule ``Kisanon ke ped par paise aate the`` Atal ji did a lot for farmers and his Government was not a currupted one. Solution to Anna, Randev bhi de rahe hain. BJP have real solutions against curruption. Solve nahin kar sakte to Kursi se utarjao.

Modi has put it the most approprieately. MMS is running her majesty`s govt as ``Govt of foreigners, by foreigners and for the foreigners``. Madam during here ``surgery`` in US had all the interaction with walmart, got her doe for letting it start its chain in INDIA and so all this ``FDI in retail``. It should have been named as ``Foreign direct loot`` from India.

It should be telecasted on POGO or Hungama rather than News channels. Youngsters have good ideas than this Economist. Was he experimenting his economical ability? Starting from VAT current PM changed rules and rules for economy. More & more Small shopkeepers are added every year by VAT for Indian economy. By entry of FDI certainly these shopkeepers will loose their small business and Nation will loose collection from VAT. Finally after 8 years he says ``paise ped par nahi aate``. Then what was he doing last 8 years. This party will collect more from us for the fund. Then after a fortnight he will increase petrol rates and say ``paise ped par nahi aate``. ``Kya humare paise ped par aate hain??`` However, everyone would love to contribute by deisel or gas for the nations benefit. But who knows ``Humare contribution se desh nahin Congress tarakki jaror karega``. I hope BJP or Anna at the centre.

Dear PM- You are trying to draw the attention of the nation away from Coalgate and other scams for which you and your govt. is accountable. Also, under the current circumstances, Walmart like companies will never take risks to invest in India where there is no stable govt, where 2G liences have been cancelled and foreign Investors have lost huge amounts, where Coal Blocks are cancelled for corruption , where people of the country have lost faith in govt.Every foreign investor will think 100times before investing in India. To allow 51% FDI is not enough, you have to build confidence in the investors first and then think of FDI for growth of India. Mend your working, bring in honest people in your cabinet, bring LOKPAL and take the country and all political parties in to confidence before going ahead on any reforms.
