New Delhi: PM Manmohan Singh’s initiative to ensure honesty in public life by political leaders by introducing a code of conduct has found support in those who will come under it- the ministers.
As news trickled in of a possible letter by the PM that asks various Central and State ministers to declare their assets & liabilities and disassociate themselves with any business- private or government (interest in PSUs)- ministers in the Union cabinet came out in its support.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Urban Development
Minister S Jaipal Reddy welcomed the decision.
"It is a normal practice. That is whenever you give
statement of assets and liabilities annually, the statement
has to be given to the PM and to the Speaker," Mukherjee said.
The party had also initiated such a process, he added.
Union Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily described it as a positive step as it aims at cleaning up the system.
“It’s a positive step towards cleaning up the system,” he said and added: “I have already declared all my assets and liabilities to the PM.”
Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has also welcomed the move and said: “It is a positive step and will bring transparency in the system.”
