Mumbai: Police have prepared sketches of two
gunmen who shot dead criminal lawyer Shahid Azmi at his
office yesterday even as they suspect that the killing could
be the handiwork of underworld.

Two persons barged into the office of Azmi in suburban
and shot him dead while another gunman waited outside to keep
a watch. All the three escaped after committing the crime.

"We have prepared sketches of two gunmen who had shot at
Azmi, based on the description given by the peon in Azmi`s
office. The sketch of one person is very clear and our
investigations are on the right track," said Joint
Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria.

25 persons have been questioned so far, Maria said adding
police were not aware whether Azmi (32) had any threat to his
life.

Azmi, who defended 26/11 accused Faheem Ansari, had
received threat from Ravi Pujari gang some years back.
However, after 2007, the lawyer had not yet informed police
about threats to his life.

An officer, on condition of anonymity, said the murder
could have been done at the behest of underworld.

Meanwhile, the lawyer fraternity has expressed shock and
grief over the murder. Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam
said Azmi was a young and brilliant lawyer while Majeed Memon
said in his death the lawyer community had lost a good hand.
