Ahmedabad: The union government is likely to
come up with a policy to curb the publication of misleading
advertisements, Rajiv Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of
Consumers Affairs, said on Saturday.
He was speaking at the workshop organised by the Ministry
and Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC).
"The Consumer Protection Act has a provision that the
state or the central government can file a complaint on behalf
of any consumer, if he/she becomes a victim of unfair trade
practise. But, this kind of initiative is not taken up due to
lack of proper guidelines," he said.
"Secondly, there is no clarity on which kind of
supportive material should be collected to ascertain veracity
of an advertisement. A proper methodology for this purpose
should be fixed.
"In view of this, our ministry is organising workshops
in various parts of the country and this is the second one
after Bangalore. After due consultation with all the
stakeholders, the government will come up with a proper
policy," Agarwal said.
