New Delhi: In the backdrop of demands by political parties, government on Thursday enhanced the election expenditure of candidates to Rs 40 lakh for parliamentary constituencies and Rs 16 lakh for assembly seats.

A Law Ministry notification said the "maximum limit" of election expenses now stood at Rs 40 lakh for parliamentary constituencies and Rs 16 lakh assembly constituencies.

So far, the maximum limit for parliamentary constituencies was Rs 25 lakh and Rs 10 lakh for assembly seats.

The notification, issued in consultation with the Election Commission, will further amend the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.

While the maximum election expense for most of the states stands at Rs 40 lakh for parliamentary seats, it is Rs 27 lakh for Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, Rs 22 lakh for Goa, Rs 35 lakh for Manipur and Meghalaya and Rs 32 lakh for Mizoram.

Except Delhi, the expenses vary between Rs 16 lakh and Rs 32 lakh.

For Delhi, the maximum limit is Rs 40 lakh.
