New Delhi: A visibly happy Pranab Mukherjee on Friday said that he feels honoured for having been named as UPA’s presidential candidate and hoped that there will be consensus on his name.
Speaking to reporters, Pranab Said, “I am grateful to Congress president Sonia Gandhi for this recognition.”
“I accept this offer with all humility. In my long political career spanning five decades I have been fortunate to receive love affection and confidence of my party colleagues and members and leaders of other political parties all along. I am deeply indebted to them, I will now again seek their indulgence and support,” he said.
On whether he will be the consensus candidate, Pranab said, “We have requested and appealed to all political parties to lend their support.”
Regarding Mamata Banerjee, who has been opposed to his candidature for President, Pranab said, "She is like my sister and I will seek her support."
With regards to whop would be his possible replacement at North Block, Pranab said that the matter will be decided by the Congress president and the Prime Minister.
Dismissing suggestions that UPA and his party will find it difficult to find a suitable replacement for him, he said, “I am not the depository of all knowledge in our government and there are other qualified people also. Prime Minister is an eminent economist and under his leadership we will overcome the temporary crisis.”
