New Delhi: A day after the Lokpal Bill was cleared by the Lower
House of Parliament, Team Anna member and eminent lawyer Prashant Bhushan on Wednesday said that the government has come up with a Bill
that makes the Lokpal institution subservient to the former.
Accusing that the passed Bill targets non-governmental organizations,
he said that this is not what their team had been demanding and campaigning for.
He expressed his dissent over the inclusion of the Prime Minister under the ambit of Lokpal with riders.
He called the government’s attempt to provide Constitutional status
to the Lokpal Bill as a diversionary tactic and inconsequential to the effectiveness of the Bill.
Taking on the BJP, he said the Bill the opposition
has been calling for is partially appropriate and even accused the
former of reverting from its stand that there should be
provision of Lokayuktas within the Lokpal.
On the low turnout of the supporters at the
MMRDA ground where Anna Hazare is staging a three-day fast, Bhushan
said the empty ground doesn’t suggest that the support
for the campaign has dried up.
