President donates Rs 15,000 for old age pensioners

A Rashtrapati Bhavan official said the President has also told the delegation that she would take up the matter with the government.

New Delhi: Extending support to the cause of the elderly, President Pratibha Patil on Thursday made a contribution of Rs 15,000 to `Pension Parishad`, which is protesting in the national capital to press for universal pension scheme in the country.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan official said the President has also told the delegation that she would take up the matter with the government.

"This is an issue which needs sympathetic consideration," Patil was quoted as saying by Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson Archana Datta.

According to a release by the Parishad, parliamentarians including Supriya Sule, Sanjeev Naik and Vandana Chavan of the Nationalist Congress Party and Sanjay Nirupam of the Congress said they would support the group`s demand inside and outside the Parliament.

A number of people are on five-day dharna at Jantar Mantar here since May 7 demanding universal pension.
