New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday said President Pranab Mukherjee is rightfully protecting the nation`s integrity and interest through his tough remark that state-sponsored terrorism emanating from Pakistan`s soil cannot be tolerated.

"The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the three forces, and being the Supreme Commander of the armed forces, he has made this statement because he is above the day-to-day politics or party politics," BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said.

"Integrity of the country and its interest is what he is supposed to protect and this is exactly what he is doing and he is airing the views which most citizens in this country are airing. There have been 500 incursions by Pakistan, around 300 by China yet the Government is sleeping," she added.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Vijay, echoing similar sentiments, said the government should learn from President Mukherjee`s statement, and added that India wants peace, but not at the cost of it national integrity.

"The government should learn from the statement made by the President. He has not only set a good example by stalling the ordinance, but he has strongly spoken about terror activities by Pakistan. Until Pakistan stops terrorist activities, there is no meaning in having talks," he said.

"India wants peace, but not at the cost of it national integrity. Pakistan under ISI is trying to spread terror in the Indian subcontinent. It is time to teach a lesson for Pakistan. The president`s statement on Pakistan is a strong message to our government," he added.

Asserting that state-sponsored terrorism from across the border cannot be accepted, PresidentPranab Mukherjee has said India wants peace with Pakistan, but there can be no compromise with its own territorial integrity.

"Terrorist activities must be curbed. And, state-sponsored terrorism can never be accepted. Therefore, repeatedly, we are saying, please dismantle the terrorist outfits which are located in your area," he said in an interview to Euronews.

President Mukherjee, who is presently on an official visit to Belgium, said non-state actors who perpetrate terrorism was a word used by Pakistan.

"It may not be. But non-state actors, that is the phrase they used, then I responded by saying that non-state actors are not coming from heaven. Non-state actors are coming from territory under your control," said President Mukherjee.

"And not now, in 2004 Pakistan agreed that their territories will not be allowed to be used by forces inimical to India," he added, when he was asked to comment that India says that this is state-sponsored terrorism and Pakistan says it is not state-sponsored terrorism.

President Mukherjee said India wants peace with its neighbours, and stressed that no nation can, however, compromise on its territorial integrity.
