Presidential poll - The arithmetic Here is a look at numbers which are required for a candidate to become President of India.

  • Total number of votes (5,49,408 of MPs and 5,49,474 of MLAs): 10, 98, 882

  • Minimum votes required for President to be elected: 5,49,442

    Alliance wise position:

    UPA

  • Total Votes: 4,60,191 (42%, including TMC)

  • Congress: 3,30,485

The votes with three crucial UPA allies are

  • TMC: 48,049

  • SP: 68, 812

  • BSP: 43,349

    Possible equations:

  • UPA - TMC: 412142

  • UPA + SP: 529003

  • UPA - SP: 391379

Even if UPA goes without Mamata and with Mulayam and Mayawati, the numbers are: UPA - TMC + SP + BSP: 524303. The figure is still below the magic figure of 5,49,442.

    NDA

  • Total Votes: 304,785 (28%)

  • BJP: 2,23,885

    NON-UPA, NON-NDA

  • Total Votes: 2,62,408 (24%)

    Crucial Votes

  • SP + BSP + TMC : 68,812+ 43,349+ 48,049

    UPA'S vote share: 4,49,133

  • Congress: 330405

  • TMC: 45925

  • Magic Figure: 549442

  • UPA + RJD + SP + BSP: (49,133 + 10,350 + 66,688 + 45,473)

  • Magic Figure: 549442

    NDA'S vote Share: 3,04,785

  • Short by 2,44,657 votes

  • Magic Figure: 549442

As the situation stands none of the existing alliances have majority to elect its candidate.

Political parties get their votes based on their share in Electoral College which consists of State MLA and MPs. The bigger state MLAs has more weigtage compared to smaller state MLAs.

Dr. Abdul Kalam would be a best choice

Mr. Pranab Mukherjee is already a failure as a finance minister as his tenure witnessed at it`s worst the devaluation of Indian Currency and hence Indian economic scenario in every aspects and avenues besides a chaotic environment of frequent fuel price hikes, short sighted fiscal policies on energy and power issues, unwanted austerity measures, and a steep rise in the prices of essential commodities making the worst nightmare for the Indian populace at large. The nation may be heading to bankruptcy like Greece, if he continues as Finance Minister further. Obviously his choice is ruled out for the top job of the country which requires elite adornment by truly successful and popularly consensual, and best performing persona of the stature and the like of the Ex-President Dr. APJ Abdhul Kalam given the prevailing conditions of nuclear conflicts in the world scenario, in political, economic, and social situations.
