Chennai: Senior BJP leader LK Advani met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa on Thursday to discuss the Presidential poll issues.
The meeting that was held at Jayalalithaa’s office in the secretariat today afternoon assumed significance as their no clarity yet on who would be the next president of India.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Advani said, “We discussed Presidential poll issue…we will coordinate on the decision.”
Advani said that NDA is meeting tomorrow over the issue, while also chiding the Congress for its clumsy handling of the issue and its failure to build consensus on the issue.
Interestingly, today’s meeting comes in the backdrop of Jayalalithaa by joining hands with her Orissa counterpart Naveen Patnaik and announcing the name of PA Sangma as the most suitable person to occupy the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
However, her suggestion had elicited only a lukewarm response from other political parties.
Jayalalithaa also, separately, addressed the press today, she said, “Advanji is a respected senior leader of the BJP and I am leader of my party, it is but natural that we will discuss the presidential elections.
On whether she agreed with Advani’s observation on clumsy handling of Presidential polls, she said, “The events of yesterday show that the entire matter has been botched very badly by the Congress.”
Importantly, she avoided a question on whether PA Sangma remains her choice as the next occupant of Rashtrapati bhavan.
