Prez poll: After JD(U), now Sena bats for Pranab Mumbai: In a major boost to UPA Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee, key NDA constituent Shiv Sena on Monday night assured him of its support in his bid for the top Constitutional post.

"The Sena will support Pranab Mukherjee (in the Presidential polls)," Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut told PTI tonight.

The assurance was given to Mukherjee who called up Sena chief Bal Thackeray and his son Uddhav Thackeray, the party Executive President, today, Sena sources said.

Sena, the oldest ideological ally of BJP, was understood to be concerned over the approach of NDA to the Presidential polls and disappointed about the fact that the alliance has not been able finalise its candidate.

Shiv Sena had supported Pratibha Patil in 2007, breaking ranks with BJP as Patil hailed from Maharashtra.

BJP and other NDA constituents had at that time backed late Bhairon Singh Shekhawat for the post of President.

Earlier, there were indications that BJP was pushing its allies JD-U and Shiv Sena to agree on supporting former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma and give up plans for a consensus on Mukherjee.

Sena is the oldest ideological ally of the BJP and it had supported Pratibha Patil in 2007, breaking ranks with BJP as Patil hailed from Maharashtra.

The BJP and the NDA leaders had then backed late Bhairon Singh Shekhawat for the presidential post.

I completely agree with karan, it`s not about choosing people from majority and minority community. It’s about choosing the best deserving candidate for nation`s top most post and caste, community, race, sex, religion should not be criteria for eligibility.

For the last 60 years India has not had a single Christian President. The President’s post is above caste, creed & religion. If that is the case, a President from the Christian minority community. Why can’t Sangma be a President?

Even am christian simon but i keep nation first. There should be an eligible candidate for the post of president. Right now there is no eligible christian candidate for this post. Dont forget our defense minister is christian so dont make such bias statement. India has made sikh & muslim to a high post which are in minority. You should be ashamed of yourself for making such statements

It has become a joke of the opposition and proves Congress and its allies still dominate the Parliament. Wonder opposition does not have a strong candidate to be at the post for the president. Pranab is indeed a good option but PS Sangma could have been better because he belongs to North East. Somewhere India has still not been able to win the trust of North East people. Making Sangma the president would have helped in it but nevertheless all for the best
