Prez poll: Sangma challenges Pranab’s nomination Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Former Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s Presidential candidature was on Monday hit by allegations of conflict of interest.

PA Sangma, who has the support of the BJP and several other opposition parties, today raised objection to UPA nominee Mukherjee's candidature allegedly for holding an office of profit.

Sangma alleged that Mukherjee holds the post of chairman at Indian Statistical Institute, saying he should be barred from contesting Presidential polls under office of profit.

The development came as the scrutiny of Mukherjee’s nomination papers, which was to happen today, has been postponed till tomorrow.

The Returning Officer at the Rajya Sabha Secretariat has asked Mukherjee to respond to allegations by tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Indian Statistical Institute today clarified that Pranab had resigned from his post on June 20 so there is no basis to claim that he is holding an office of profit.

Later, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal also confirmed that Pranab Mukherjee had earlier resigned as Chairman of the Indian Statistical Institute well before he filed nomination as Presidential candidate.

Interestingly, Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy speculated whether Mukherjee’s nomination will be rejected in light of new developments.

He tweeted: “Will Pranab's nomination be rejected? Scrutiny suddenly postponed to tomorrow (sic)”

“Pranab has various offices of profit secretly? That is the buzz in Hong Kong,” he added.

God knows what is the truth about this, but if this is for country`s benefit, then I would personally not object. All the fellow citizens, Pranab da is an honest man and a man of impeccable character. I also hate Congress as equally as you all do. But some politicians across the party lines are good and exemplary. Pranabda is one among them. Anyway, between PA Sangma and Pranabda, I would opt for Pranabda because Sangma is fighting this election like an assembly election whereas Pranabda is doing it keeping the dignity of Presidency intact. I deeply wished Shri APJ Kalam ji contested this! But alas, our political scoundrels scored a gimmick over us. Jai Hind!

Pranab`s candidature stands to be rejected on technical grounds. Will Sangma then be declared winner? Is this the miracle Sangma spoke about?

Mr P A Sangama wuld make a better president than Pranab Mukerji as he is able to think above the party lines . Mr PM can never arise above congress shadow as he owes his very existence in politics to congress party . I wish the congress men opt for sangama who has spent more time with that party than outside . He has only proved that in case of need , he can rise over the party dictates if his conscious dictates so

BJP again playing murky politics. instead of nominating a candidate within, they are now backing a dissident candidate(NCP) to the Presidential elections. BJP often forgets that they are a national party and should have a national policy or vision and support the govt when it matters and oppose it when it matters. Here BJP is found toying with regional parties, disgruntled individuals and oppose the Congress for the opposition sake. We would like to see a BJP standing tall and show that they are capable of ruling the country if given a chance.

Pranob be debarred as the party who nominated him doled out hundreds/thousands of crores rupees as aid to state governments like bihar in lieu of buying their support to pranob as alleged by naveen patnaik of BJD
