Hajipur: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday conveyed to RJD chief Lalu Prasad the UPA government`s decision to name the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as its candidate for the presidential polls and requested him for support.
"Soniaji has conveyed to me the the UPA government`s decision to project the FM as the presidential nominee and sought my support and I thanked her for abiding by the principles of coalition dharma," he told reporters here.
Prasad, who arrived in Vaishali district enroute to the mass awareness campaign to seek public support to his demand for setting up three central universities in Bihar, said that he has already announced that the Congress President will have a final say on the selection of the UPA`s candidate for the presidential polls and his party`s decision to support such a candidate.
The RJD supremo also appealed to all political parties to extend their support to Mukherjee to pave the way for his election by consensus to the highest constitutional post.
He lashed out at the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for deciding on her own to announce the former president APJ Abdul Kalam`s candidature for the presidential polls and said that by doing so she has reduced her political stature.
"Mamata has reduced her political stature by announcing Kalam`s candidature for the presidential polls," Prasad said.
The RJD supremo, at the same time, appealed to the West Bengal Chief Minister to back Mukherjee`s candidature in the presidential poll as it was the first occasion that a person from her state has been put forward by the UPA for the top constitutional post.
Prasad said that he had earlier in the day spoken to CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury about the presidential polls.
