Price rise deteriorating country's health: BJP

New Delhi: The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday criticised the government over the hike in prices of petrol and warned against any attempt to raise LPG prices, saying they would rake up the issue from "parliament to the streets".

"Today because there is corruption in the country, the common man is angered with Congress... the party is taking revenge by rising price," BJP spokesperson Sayed Shahnawaz Hussain told reporters.

He said that even as Congress president Sonia Gandhi is recovering from her ailment, the health of the nation is "deteriorating" because of price rise.

"Sonia-ji has come back after recovering, we wish her well, But the health condition of people of the country is deteriorating because of the price rise," he said.

The party also opposed any attempt to raise the prices of cooking gas (LPG).

"If they increase the prices of cooking gas, we will raise it from parliament to the streets," he said.

The BJP said the government was trying to blame the hike on the losses suffered by petroleum companies, and the weakness of the rupee in the international market.

Petrol prices were hiked Thursday, for the 10th time since June 2010, by Rs.3.14 a litre from Friday. The latest hike comes after a steep upward revision of Rs.5 a litre in May.
