New Delhi: Faced with the uphill task of rejuvenating the party rank and file after the Lok Sabha poll disaster, the Congress appears to be banking on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to resurrect its sinking fortunes.

As per a media report, Monday, Priyanka will be formally inducted into the party after the upcoming round of assembly elections. Over the years, though not officially part of the party, Priyanka has been playing an active role in managing party affairs in Amethi and Rae Bareli, parliamentary constituencies of Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

While there is no clarity on the role she will assume in the party, the report quoted Congress leaders as saying that she may be made general secretary (organisation), a post currently held by 10 Janpath confidant Janardhan Dwivedi.
The other option being talked about is her appointment as Congress` chief in crucial Uttar Pradesh. The party understands that its revival will begin in real terms only after it does well in the state and Bihar.

However, party leaders also assert that Priyanka`s induction would not in any manner change the leadership structure within the party as Rahul Gandhi will continue to lead the party.

The assertion is important as several Congress leaders have openly questioned Rahul`s leadership capabilities and called for a change but the party has been steadfast in its view that Rahul will continue to lead the party.
Reacting to the news story, senior Congress leader from UP, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, said, “I personally feel that Priyanka ji should join active politics, but ultimately it`s her decision.”

While it is certain that Priyanka`s entry will give a boost to the party it remains to be seen whether she will be able to beat Amit Shah in the battle for Uttar Pradesh.
