New Delhi: The process to set up 5000
rural courts across the country that would speed up disposal
of cases began on Friday with the Law Ministry issuing a
notification to this effect on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

Now, the state governments will initiate a process to
set up the rural courts. By the next fiscal, the Central
government plans to set up 200 such courts. The number is
expected to reach its target of 500 courts in three years.
With more than 3.11 crore cases pending nationwide,
the rural courts are expected to deliver speedy justice.

The `gram nyayayalas` (rural courts) will deal with
cases at a level below the subordinate courts but in the same
capacity.

The Gram Nyayalaya Act, 2008 provides for first class
judicial magistrates dispensing justice.
The notification said the Centre will bear the full
cost on capital account of the courts to be set up at the
district headquarters and in taluks. The cost of litigation
would be borne by the state and not by the litigant.
