New Delhi: The Rapid Action Force of the
CRPF is undergoing an upgrading process, being on a
procurement spree for riot control kits.
The procurement comes at a time when the paramilitary
force is increasingly being deployed for law and order duties.
On the shopping list are special NATO specification
helmets, knuckle and groin covers and gas masks, among other
Also included in the list are parachute flares to be used
as distress signal in case a CRPF personnel is in trouble
during riot situations, night vision goggles, full body
shields and pepper spray.
"Procurement is a continuous process. Since CRPF is
involved in a lot of law and order duties like in Jammu and
Kashmir, procurement of anti-riot kits is necessary to meet
the growing demands of the personnel," an official said.
In Jammu and Kashmir, where the CRPF are facing
stone-pelters on a daily basis, 1,980 personnel were wounded
over the last two years.
Meanwhile, the CRPF has already procured a few pepper
guns on a trial basis in Jammu and Kashmir.
If the trials prove successful, the pepper guns would be
used in the militancy-hit state which has been seeing law and
order problems over the last few weeks.
The use of tear gas shells and even rubber bullets have
failed in a large extent to counter the menace of
stone-pelting and CRPF officials believe the pepper guns could
come in handy.
