Rahul Gandhi tops poll for India's next PM

Rahul Gandhi tops poll for India`s next PM New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, scion of India's Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, is the favourite choice to be the country's next Prime Minister, an opinion poll showed Monday.

Among his ruling Congress party colleagues, Gandhi is preferred by 42 percent of Indians to lead the country, according to the poll.

"No other Congress leader poses any challenge to him," said leading pollster Yogendra Yadav of the New Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies.

Some 34 percent felt Gandhi should become premier immediately, replacing Manmohan Singh, who has been painted by critics as a "lame duck" leader after failing to prevent a string of corruption scandals.

Just 22 percent of the 39,000 people polled in the national survey believed Singh, a Gandhi family loyalist widely seen as keeping the prime minister's seat warm for Rahul, should continue in the post.

Release of the poll follows a decision last week by Gandhi's mother, Sonia, to ask her son to help steer India's ruling party in her absence as she recovers from an operation.

Gandhi, 41, was named to a four-member panel to run the party's affairs while his mother, 64, who is Congress party president and seen as India's most powerful politician, recovers from surgery for an undisclosed condition.

Although long billed as a premier-in-waiting, Rahul has shunned high-profile cabinet berths in favour of grassroots activism promoting the interest of India's teeming poor and building up the party's youth wing.

The Gandhi family has dominated India's political scene for much of the period since the country's independence from Britain in 1947.

The poll, conducted for a television network, showed 54 percent believed Rahul was trustworthy and genuine in his concern for the poor.

Rahul Gandhi also won the poll when pitched against politicians from the main opposition BJP, scoring 19 percent.

Narendra Modi, the controversial BJP Chief Minister of Gujarat, was the nearest opposition leader, collecting five percent.

Modi is a divisive figure as he is accused of turning a blind eye to Hindu-Muslim riots in the state in 2002 that left some 2,000 people dead, mostly Muslims.

Sushma Swaraj is the right choice for the post of the Prime Minister. She has experience, oratory and a middle-class Indian woman`s image which are all a very good package for the high office. Narendra Modi is no doubt a towering leader but he still may be unacceptable for some people (Godhra riots) Sushma has been in Politics for the past three and half decades and has served as a minister at the state and central level. She can hold the audience spell bound and can feel the pulse of the people. I was carefully following the Lokpal debate and I could clearly see a great leader in her. In India women have always succeeded in Politics due to their late husbands, fathers, fathers-in-law. In some cases they have remained unmarried and carved a niche for themselves in Politics. But even in such cases it has been due to a male mentor or God father behind them. But Sushma is a rare blend of a successful family life and a glorious Political career. It would be a great day for Indian womanhood and a great day for democracy, the day Sushma Swaraj becomes the Prime Minister.

media always supprot gandhi family. see survey, on one side , media says that - this is the nation of 55 young generation, and on other hand, media highlight only gandhi family. i would like to ask you (media) that- is there no other young face in india, who has more potential and leadership quality? if yes ! then how many young people (except gandhi family) promoted by media ? a nation of 120 crore people and media project only one young leader ? is this countrey really of young people`s country? if yes , then how many leaders named by media ? media never support middle class leaders. media only support higher class politicians and their sons and daughters. media should not ask india- as a nation of young generation. because media view`s is that- only young leader is in india- rahul gandhi or memebr of gandhi family

in your own survey, 67 per cent people say that rahul is not fit to be pm. then, why quote other misleading surveys. will anybody tell us as to what are qualifications of rahul to be pm or is this post so useless that it does not require any qualifications? already, this family has destroyed india enough. now, no more congress-led governments. india and indians deserve much better.

i think rahul gandhi is not a person who can take decisions. he still can`t figure out whether he wants to marry gis colombian girlfriend veronique. he still cannot decide that he should become a minister first to gain first hand experience in ruling. since he aspires to become pm of all of india, he has not shown any good will to the large section of indians who believe that india should cherish its hindu culture and history (without obstructing other). to the contrary, he from time to time dealienates hindu organisations like rss and vhp, bajrang dal and bjp. he`s not able to understand that hindus feel marginalised in india, they see their temples taken over by the governments, bills proposed to brand them as communalists, their holy places being used as filth-dumping place, their gods denied (upa denied existence of lord ram) etc. i an for a gandhi becoming pm: varun gandhi has all the qualities needed to become an excellent pm for all indians. let us talk of varun gandhi becoming pm! bjp must give him more responsability to grow and get experience in ruling. he can start by becoming minister in some of the bjp-ruled states!!

obviously the 39000 persons questioned consist mostly of congressmen.otherwise the only 4 seats won by the congress in bihar is the real indication of the popularity of rahul.his recent statements in up only show his political immaturity.he has also never expressed any opinion on corruption, black money, cwg scam,2g spectrum etc.this man is most unfit to head our country- he is what he is only because he is a ghandy manipulated to gandhi.
