New Delhi: Pitching for regular running of
steam locos between tourism destinations, Railways on Saturday said that
it will help preserve steam heritage as well as boost tourism
in the country.
"The operation of steam locos between Delhi-Alwar and in
hill stations can be a great tourist attraction and we should
work for it," said Divisional Rail Manager Aswani Lohani
while addressing the National Steam Congress here.
Lohani said the railways have recently revived the steam
locoshed at Rewari where nine steam locos are being showcased
for the public.
Railway Board Member Sanjiv Handa said, "Steam loco is
the heart of heritage and it is should be revived. The
movement for revival of steam locos is catching on and the
revival process should be institutionalised."
President of Indian Steam Railway Society RC Sethi,
however, said there is a shortage of good coal, spare parts
and supporting staff to keep steam locos alive.
"In order to promote steam heritage, every major station
should have steam locos," Sethi said.
