New Delhi: After 24 hours and a lot of embarrassment, the stolen pilot vehicle of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan was traced and recovered on Tuesday morning.

Rahman’s Bolero SUV car (DL2 CQ 3678), used as a pilot vehicle of his convoy, was stolen from the residence of his driver Niranjan Mohanty in Mahipalpur, near to Indira Gandhi International airport yesterday.

Today morning, the SUV was found parked in a parking lot in Rangpuri area, that’s behind the Raddisson Hotel close to the airport.

The car was traced by Intelligence Bureau (IB) at around 6.30 am today morning, which was then handed over to Delhi Police at 8.30 am. Further details are awaited.

The IB was in the loop due to the security concerns about the vehicle as it was equipped with a radio tag that allows it entry through the barricades in Parliament.

Yesterday, Mohanty was questioned about the sequence of events. He is supposed to have told the investigating officers that he took the car to his home after duty yesterday night and found it missing when he woke up today morning.

However a driver taking sensitive vehicle home is a common practice it seems. "The driver had taken the vehicle to his residence last night as he was relieved from duty very late. This is a common practice," sources said.

Rahman Khan’s official residence is at 28, Akbar Road; he is not in Delhi at the moment.

A senior police official said a case has been registered.

"We are investigating why the driver took the vehicle to his residence. The vehicle has a radio frequency tag which allows it to enter Parliament," the official said.

Rahman Khan, who hails from Karnataka, was the Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers before being nominated for the post of Dy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.
