Ramesh assures SIA before land acquisition

Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said Social Impact Assessment (SIA) would be done before acquisition of any land under the proposed National Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011.

Berhampur (Orissa): Union Rural Development
Minister Jairam Ramesh on Saturday said Social Impact Assessment
(SIA) would be done before acquisition of any land under the
proposed National Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and
Resettlement Bill, 2011.

"The assessment will be conducted not by the concerned
company or government, but by the panchayat," he told
reporters here.

The government was trying to introduce the Bill in the
current session of Parliament, he said, adding that many
suggestions were pouring in on the bill and some of them would
be incorporated.
The government proposes to provide livelihood support to
the land losers and also the persons affected by the land
acquisition, the Minister said.
He said the state governments would be allowed to provide
extra benefits over and above those stipulated in the proposed
Act.
