Ramesh effect: BJP leaders shun convocation gowns

Indore: Following the footsteps of Union
Minister Jairam Ramesh, BJP leaders here on Wednesday refused to wear
traditional robe during the convocation ceremony of Devi
Ahilyabia Vishwa Vidyalaya (DAVV) here.

Senior BJP leader and Indore MP, Sumitra Mahajan,
Minister of State for Public Health, Mahendra Hardia and Mayor
Krishna Murari Moghe did not put on convocation gowns, saying
they are not in consonance with the Indian culture.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahajan, in the presence of
the Governor and Chancellor of Madhya Pradesh Universities,
Rameshwar Thakur, underlined the importance of connecting
higher education with Indian culture.

However, taking a dig at the colonial culture, Mahajan
quipped, "Why should we wear these gowns?"

Mahajan said DAVV should initiate steps to change the
tradition of wearing these gowns soon. The change will bring
in encouraging results, she remarked.

"I did not wear the gown as I feel that it does not gel
with the Indian tradition," Hardia told reporters after the
ceremony.

He denied ruling BJP in Madhya Pradesh was trying to
saffronise the education system.

"We are talking about wearing traditional Indian dress in
the convocation ceremonies and not about saffronisation, he
said and suggested simple dress can be put on in such events.
