Respect Internet freedom, US tells India

Washington: Voicing its support for full freedom of the Internet, the US has urged India to maintain respect for fundamental freedoms, while probing rumours that have caused an exodus of northeastern Indians from southern cities.

The US "have seen these reports that northeastern Indians are returning to the North-East from cities in southern India, and these media reports that the returns are due to concerns about personal safety", State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters on Tuesday when asked about India blocking some websites for allegedly orchestrating a campaign of hatred.

"On the larger question of Internet freedom, you know where we are on that issue, and we are always on the side of full freedom of the Internet," she said.

"But as the Indian government continues to investigate these instances and preserve security, we also always urge the government to maintain its own commitment to human rights, fundamental freedoms, rule of law."

Asked to explain its stand on WikiLeaks in view of its professed support of full freedom of the internet, Nuland said: "WikiLeaks didn't have to do with freedom of the Internet. It had to do with the compromise of US government classified information."

The US had not asked for any investigation by the Indian government nor was it part of the investigation, Nuland said, noting that India itself has "called an investigation of some of the sources of the rumours that have caused people to start to move".

"And so we are going to obviously watch and see how that process goes forward," she said.

Asked if the US had or would ask US-based companies, including Google, Facebook, and Twitter to comply with Indian government's directive to go after the sources of erroneous information, Nuland said she could not speak "of the conversation that those companies may or may not be having with the Indian government".

"We maintain open lines to our own companies in India, as we do around the world, and we are obviously open to consultation with them if they need it from us," she said.

Would US have kept quiet if the same incident happened in US where the racial abuse of black and white started again leading to riots? Indians have always respected freedom, which is why those dogs were able to post crooked messages. India please go after those scoundrels making a mess of unity in India.

Time has come for us to wake. Today we feel as we can`t live a moment without US. US always remain as the Big Brother. Our trade today fully based US Dollar which is the currency of US. Computer, MS-Operating System, Applications, Programmes, Internet, Social Networking and different educational, economic issues, defence system, GPS, Sattellite, Technology, Science, Health, Patent and so lot on which we depend on US. Can India ever be equipped with these systems ? With the span of time depending on these systems Indian become the slave in the hand of US. Today can we imagine a life without US ? Its time to ask ourselves to find the answer.......

Hate mail only serves to create more hate which can lead to social unrest. So India has a right to monitor such activity and use damage control.

You filthy USA, stop interfering in Indian affair. We know well what kind of freedom is in USA. Just see the example of Assange? Speaking of freedom for others is very easy than to act on it yourself.USA is after money through facebook/twitter/etcccc.Indian Government should come to its senses and block these website for the safety of its people which i really doubt. See China and some Arab Countries where such sites are totally banned and people do not have any kind of communal problems. What kind of help/use these sites give to people all over the world, only hatred/sex/criminal etccc.

I am surprised that obama has been talking garbage of internet freedom. Here in us itself people can`t talk hatred speech or anything. In case there is a murder or anything by a black/white/hispanic person of another race then the fbi investigates is it a race involved????? Then they try accordingly. So why is us interfering & telling others to let people have a freedom of internet. shame on obama.

We should stop using Facebook immedaitely. Whatever US says is for their ``money``. Indians use Facebook in a big way and so they are worried about the revenue loss if we take a firm stand. They are not worried about Internet freedom actually. Americans are a lot who will go to any extent to make money. Stop using Facebook.... I assure you friends will be friends... you will not lose anythin in life.
