New Delhi: In order to sharpen focus on road safety in the New Year, the Road Transport Ministry will launch various campaigns for a week from January 1.

"Over 1.25 lakh persons were killed in around 4.8 lakh road accidents reported in the country in 2009. Statistics show that almost 80 per cent of road accidents take place due to driver's fault. This indicates need of a change in attitude," Road Transport Minister C P Joshi said while announcing the safety programme.

He added that his ministry has roped in other stakeholders like traffic police, transport authorities, schools and voluntary organizations for the road safety week from January 1 to January 7, 2012. The ministry will display the slogan -- accidents brings tears, safety brings cheers -- and various other safety messages on roads across the country, Joshi said, adding that the target is to educate the younger generation.
