RSS distancing itself from tainted Gadkari?
New Delhi: There seems to be no end of trouble for tainted BJP president Nitin Gadkari with the party’s parent body Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) also reacting cautiously and reportedly distancing itself from the controversy surrounding him.
Reports, Friday, claimed that the top leaders of right-wing organisation, who are meeting in Chennai, are unwilling to discuss the Gadkari issue and shying from commenting on it.
The RSS, though trying to defend Nitin Gadkari in a clandstine manner, also does not want to be seen as an organisation going soft on the issue of corruption and backing its man chosen to head its political arm.
When quizzed by reporters, the RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabole said, “The RSS does not have different yardstick on corruption. Everyone is equal in the eyes of law. No one is above the law.”
“We want that the guilty must be punished. The law must take its own course.” the RSS general secretary said in a brief statement. However, he added that no resolution is likely to be passed on Gadkari or BJP at the RSS Executive meet in Chennai.
Clearly, the Gadkari episode has embarrassed both BJP and the RSS and cast a shadow over the possibility of the Nagpur leader getting a second term.
The RSS, the BJP`s mentor, had earlier issued a statement saying, it had nothing to do with the matter.
"RSS has nothing to do with any of the allegations. It is saddened by the efforts aimed at dragging Sangh`s name in this," said the statement released by RSS general secretary Suresh Bhaiya Joshi.
He also said the Sangh also believes that any individual or organisation indulging in any illegal activity "must be subjected to impartial probe" and that "all those found guilty be punished".
Analysts say that asking Gadkari to step down as president would hurt the BJP’s chances in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat which go to polls in November and December respectively.
With the RSS also having reportedly asked Gadkari to come clean on the allegations, the only choice before the BJP top leadership was to let the Maharashtra leader continue as president till his current term expires and take a final call when the time comes to decide on his second term.
The latest allegations against Gadkari are about improper business dealings as chairman of the Purti Group.
The Income Tax Department and the Company Affairs Ministry have begun separate inquiries into Gadkari`s firm and its financial dealings with 26 investor companies.
