New Delhi: A loyalist to the core, Congress veteran Vasant Sathe had made a strong plea that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should get into active politics to help the party get back to power on its own in 2014 Lok Sabha elections without the help of coalition partners.

In an interview, one of the last interactions with the media, Sathe who died on Friday, had said if Congress' ‘first family’ Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and Priyanka embarks on a vigorous mass contact drive in the months and years to come, the party could restore the past glory of single party rule in the next Lok Sabha polls.

"I tell you with guarantee that if Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka go out all over the country, then you will see a revival of Congress with the emergence of a vibrant organisation.

"There are no short cuts. I's time to throw away the crutches," the 86-year-old former union minister had said.

The Congress leader had said that after Sonia, Priyanka is the one who has more mass appeal as compared to Rahul but she is not coming forward in active politics as she apparently feels her brother will be "sidelined".

Sathe, who was a close associate of Indira Gandhi, had a decade back in one of the AICC meetings told Sonia Gandhi, who had recently taken over the reins of the party, that his dream was to see her become the Prime Minister.

“I want to see Sonia Gandhi as PM before I die”, he had said.

During Janata rule from 1978-80, Sathe was in the forefront in Parliament to defend Indira Gandhi and to launch an attack on her detractors.

Never afraid of any controversy, he had in those years had raised many controversies including the need for Presidential form of government.
