New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday jailed for
15 days elusive woman member Pavitra Murali of Mumbai`s
controversial Boss School of Music for hurling a footwear at
erstwhile apex court judge, Justice Arijit Pasayat in 2009.
Though the apex court had earlier awarded three months
imprisonment to Pavitra and three others, a special bench of
Justices Altamas Kabir, G S Singhiv and H L Dattu reduced the
sentence to 15 days after the woman, who eluded arrest since
March 2009, today tendered an unconditional apology.
Pavitra was today produced in the court after being nabbed
by police at Mumbai after she arrived from Frankfurt. On the
earlier directions of the apex court, the authorities had
issued red corner notices for tracking her.
Though senior counsel UU Lalit pleaded for quashing her
punishment, Attorney General G E Vahanvathi opposed the same
saying three of her accomplices have already served the jail
term and she cannot be given any relief.
Three other members - Leila David, Sarita Parikh and Annie
Kotian had already undergone 3 months imprisonment after the
apex court on October 22, 2009, convicted them on contempt of
court charges for hurling a slipper at Justice Pasayat (since
retd) and making wild allegations against the judges of the
apex court and the Bombay High Court.
The trio, in fact, too were on the run for over a year
before they could be apprehended and produced in court on May
11 last year. They had been tracked down by police in Mathura.
Boss School of Music, operating from a Mumbai suburb,
had run into trouble after parents of students studying in the
school lodged complaints against its authorities for allegedly
detaining their wards illegally and indulging in "back magic"
and other illegal activities.
The school was founded by Glen Fernandes in 1996 at Vasai,
40 km from Mumbai and the police had registered several
cases against its members earlier.
