Panaji: Fiona Mackeown, mother of slain British teenager Scarlett Eden Keeling, today alleged that the delay in handing over investigation into the death of her daughter to the CBI had led to destruction of evidence.

"It would have been better if the case was handed over to the CBI soon after Scarlet was killed. The delay led to the evidence being destroyed," Fiona, who arrived in Goa to depose before the Children’s Court in the death case, said. The British school girl, holidaying with her family, was found dead at Anjuna beach in February, 2008.

The Goa police had initially said the death was caused by drowning, but later registered a murder case after Fiona launched a campaign, expressing doubts on the probe.

Fiona, who will depose before the court on July 30, alleged that Police Sub-Inspector Nerlon Albuquerque botched up the initial investigation by concluding that Scarlet's death was accidental and that there was no foul play.
