Washington: An influential American
Senator and co-chair of the Senate Indian Caucus recently met
Prime Manmohan Singh in New Delhi and discussed with him the
key elements of the Indo-US ties.
"I met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and we
discussed a number of issues of importance to both India and
the US, including economic opportunities and our shared
commitment to fighting radical extremists," Senator Cornyn
said in a statement here.
Founder and co-chairman of the Senate India Caucus,
Senator Cornyn is a member of the Senate Judiciary
Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security.
Cornyn was part of a bipartisan Senate delegation that
recently visited Afghanistan, India, Syria, Cyprus and
Morocco.
"I was able to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai
and General Stanley McChrystal who updated me on the latest
developments on the ground there, including the implementation
of President Obama`s recent surge strategy," Cornyn said.
"While there I also had the privilege of meeting with
many of America`s heroes, including Texans, who are serving
with dignity far from their loved ones this holiday season. I
was humbled by their selfless sacrifice and encouraged by
their determination to accomplish their missions and keep our
nation safe," he said.
"Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and I explored the
best possible ways to proactively identify signs of terrorist
activity and radical training. I am hopeful that Syria will
yet choose to play a stronger supporting role in our Global
War on Terror," Cornyn said.
"As we saw on Christmas day, the threat of terrorism
against Americans and other freedom-loving people across the
globe is very much alive. The need for vigilance and robust
counter-terrorism efforts cannot be underestimated," he said.
"I will continue to do all I can to support our men
and women in uniform, and our intelligence and law enforcement
communities as they take steps to bolster the safety and
security of the American people," the Senator said.
