New Delhi: In order to keep the identity secret of the 23-year old girl who was brutally raped in the national capital, ‘Delhi’s braveheart’ has been called by various names – ‘Damini’, ‘Nirbhaya’, ‘Amanat’. But Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Shashi Tharoor wants the new rape laws to be named after the para-medical student and has questioned the decision to keep the name of the rape victim a secret.

Tharoor tweeted on Tuesday, "Wondering what interest is served by continuing anonymity of #DelhiGangRape victim. Why not name & honour her as a real person w/own identity?"

He also tweeted - "Unless her parents object, she should be honoured & the revised anti-rape law named after her. She was a human being w/a name, not just a symbol.”

Tharoor has been known to speak his mind and has courted controversy before over his ‘cattle class’ remarks.

Under the law, the identity of a rape victim cannot be disclosed and printing or publishing the name or any matter which may make known the identity of any person against whom rape is committed is an offence under section 228-A of Indian Penal Code.

His comments also came close on the heels of Delhi Police registering a case against English daily for publishing material which could lead to the identification of the victim.

Tharoor's comments sparked instant reactions on Twitter with people supporting and questioning his suggestions.

The girl was gang-raped and viciously assaulted allegedly by six persons in a moving bus in South Delhi on December 16. She died in a Singapore hospital on December 29.

The aftermath of the gang-rape has seen an unprecedented uproar in the country with people protesting for a stricter laws for women.

Why he is behind that girl`s name. No law can be enacted in the name of a person. He want cheap popularity and he makes such comments. The law should be ``......law for atrocities against female. Act No......etc. By making controversy he will delay the law again.

.This honourable Minister is absolutely right if the country names the anti rape law after her name . This will be the best way the country to honour this rape victim and it will spread the world of the law to the general public. It will be very effective like the RTI law of 2005.Jai Hind

Mr Tharoor, Indians are not mature enough to know her name. What do you think will happen if it turns out her name is Muslim ? or Dalit ? Let her remain anonymous, only then can she belong to all Indians.

For once,I agree to Tharoor`s statement. The victim has not had any exposure to anmedia or any public. We dont know her name. She was shuttled around hospitals all around, cremated at some time without anybody knowing, all under Some big leaders advice. She didnt deserve to be so hidden or secret like a dreaded terrorist or an offender. She should be respected and given honour, not again like an anonomous person. These politicials would take away this name also and name this on their own or their mothers or wifes name.

It is not necessary to know the identity of the victim . I wish tharoor had made some specific suggestions like life imprsonment, castration , death penalty to make the anti-rape law more stringednt

Sad this victim of rape died a brutal death...BUT whats so brave about a girl roaming at midnight with a boyfriend? What was her bravery or STUPIDITY to break MORAL VALUES of a spiritual Indian society. What nonsense...rapes and rapists and demoralised men and women have always existed in society...Bad they may be, but its a fact of Life...they are thiefs ans parasites, but they will carry on their wrong acts...as it the KARMA of past that rekindles these acts of demoralised revenge! THE GIRLS MUST GET MORAL EDUCATION TO CURB THEIR HABITS...Revive Indian moral ethics...let us not be slaves of the western values again!! THUS SPOKE HARKADASS

Is she is the first girl raped in Republic of India? How many young and baby girls are brutally raped so far?? Enough is Enough that is the slogan for us..Its nothing in the name. Better produce and maintain the law and order in a proper way to save our sisters....
