Sibal backs Ramesh on IIT-IIM faculty remarks New Delhi: Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh's statement that the IITs and IIMs did not have world class faculty was backed on Tuesday by his colleague Kapil Sibal, who questioned whether India had world class institutions, and by others in the field.

"In the situation today, is even one of our institutions world class? If it is world class, it must be in the top 100, 150 institutions in the world. That is not evident," Sibal said, a day after Jairam Ramesh declared that the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) had quality students but not faculty.

Sibal also said the Environment Minister must be talking about his own experience.

"Of course, Jairam is talking about himself because he is a world class student and he is an IITian himself, so he has insider knowledge himself," Sibal said.

Ramesh had on Monday said the IITs and IIMs, the country's top educational institutions, were surviving only because of their quality students but did not have world-class faculty.

Supporting the Environment Minister's view, alumni associations from IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur demanded higher salary and perks for IIT teaching faculty to attract new minds in faculty to sustain IIT brand globally.

"Opening of new IITs by government without recruiting new faculty has already burdened the existing faculty in IITs. Almost every citizen in the country is paying education cess to ensure that our gurus (IIT and other teachers) are paid well. Most of the IITs are already facing faculty shortage," IIT Kharagpur Alumni Association member YPS Suri said.

"The current pay scales of IIT faculty are so unattractive that a fresh graduate from IIT attracts more salary," he said.

Programme director of the IIT Delhi Alumni Association VK Saluja agreed. "We appeal to the government to make faculty salary levels inspiring enough to attract new minds. Adding new IITs has made this problem more acute and hence the urgency of the matter," he said in a statement.

What is the personal contribution of the Jairams or Kapils or the government they are running, in making the IITs/IIMs ``world class``? Are they not responsible for forcing the brains to drain? Are they doing anything towards brain gain in order to make not only the IITs/IIMs but all institutions of higher education world class? They have failed to even set up one college in the national capital which can equal St Stephens in quality. Why should they? Their sibling can always be admitted to prime educational and professional colleges! Bright students don`t get even education loans without collateral security. Bright products of institutions of higher education have to serve under Jairams or Sibals and suffer their tantrums or acerbic tongues. What is the contribution of these worthies excepting criticizing the infrastructure laid down by Nehru. But it is not paying to talk Mahatma Gandhi or Jawaharlal Nehru, when others are quite rewarding? Only fools opt for loss making ventures, the wise always invest in profitable ventures!

Both the Congress ministers are fools and loud mouthed .Before they start criticizing others they should look at their own corrupt ridden government and illiterate ministers.

The voters will certainly give them a boot when the next elections are called.

even these institutes are plagued by these corrupt politicians who interfere with the working and research activities of these institutes. Under these circumstances how one can expect world quality and research at these institutes.no need to mention here that indian brains have been accepted worldwide as best brains in world but our corrupt politicians because of there personal selfishness are ruining them. ultimately they opt to leave these institutes and prefer to settle abroad.if they are allowed to work freely, our IIT/IIM`s can become the world class institutes. Keep these politicians away from them

Mr. Sibal and Mr. Ramesh, must pose very first question to themseives and the question is `` are Indian politicians of world class ??`` The answer is clear NO and these are the worthy one who have spoiled our country. See the level of curruption, deceit and practically every statements of them are suspect. People hardly believe any politicians to be honest. If this is the class of the law makers and then law enforcers, how one can expect the other institutions of world class.

I am a firm believer and have posted many times that IIT`s and IIM`s have already served the purpose for which they were open and that purpose was to provide a basic infrastructure for technical and management education. I can say this from personal experience that the time has come to modernize these institutions by financial backup. More money should be spent on research rather than basic education which private institutions have started providing. The problem which these institutions are creating is that their students being on cloud 9 thinking that we are from IIT`s & IIM`s are creating problems for others in technical fields even though they are doing the same work while taking twice as much salary. Let them be one level up and focus on research.

MPs,Ministers& Judges, president all hv increased their salaries in the last 2 years. For increase of salary to staff of IIT etc will say make Programs /Research and earn.
The Mps will spend Public money and sit in Delhi where the prices are subsidised.Think of the poor man in villages engaged in agriculture and unable to store the food products. Can they not utilise the network of railways and and earn revenue on storing the perishables and make life easier.India lives in villages.Ensure panchayat Raj at local places.Introduce Education thro Video and content has to be minimum six hours on education by the media complulsory from the private channels.Content to be developed by famous institutions like IIT and IIM.You will certainly see a change Nat geo/Discovery channels have started developing content in regional language. We as a nation cannot have uniformity of syllabus/exams /Fees for schools uniform allover india.
You guys are fitonly for the pot calling the Kettle black.
