New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday turned 64 as leaders thronged her residence to greet her amidst drumbeats and colourful processions taken out by party workers here.

Union Ministers A K Antony and P Chidambaram, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Chief Minister's of several Congress-ruled states besides AICC office bearers visited Gandhi to personally greet her on the occasion.

Greeting her, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said in Chennai that the UPA has "set a role model" for coalition governments in Indian politics.

Celebrations were also held at the Central Office of the party at 24 Akbar Road. Party workers also organised a 'hawan' on the occasion. Party workers from Delhi, who had visited Gandhi earlier in the morning, said they have been asked by the leadership to celebrate the Congress President's birthday in a simple manner.

As a large number of party workers from all over the country turned up outside her 10 Janpath residence, there was a massive traffic jam in the area. The main entrance of her residence, which faces Akbar Road, was blocked and visitors had to walk to greet her. There was a long queue of workers carrying bouquets.

Clad in colourful T-shirts bearing the message "Our pride is mother India, our guide is mother Sonia", a large number of party workers from Karnataka led by AICC member SS Prakasam visited Gandhi.

The party workers also carried posters of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

A large number of Delhi Pradesh Women Congress workers with placards in their hands also gathered at Gandhi's residence to greet her.

Artistes from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu also staged cultural programmes outside her residence.

@dinesh.
whats that you say about nri`s doing nothing for india ? what have you done for india that we can see? nri are responsible for generating lots of funds for india.fyi....it is the job of politicians to do things for the people of india .if india had done anything ever for the people of india then the masses would not be starving and others like us nri would not need to see a better life abroad.i see you believe in the gandhi family `s ``royal`` status.didn`t we eliminate royals and princlings in 1947 ?
this gandhi family are the leeches of india from old indira downwards.of a billion people or more you must be able to find a better qualified person surely.someone who is fair,honest and just.someone who puts the people of india first rather than their eflated ego.just a thought to help you along in your dreamworld.

Its stupid people like sam rajeev from canada (incidently has a western name) and a ray from usa who talk a lot but do little for India. Talk is cheap , but action is what counts. Let them ask themselves thruthfully wha have they done for India, if so why are they in Canada and US. I guess they are all small cheap minded idiots

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, though not an Indian by birth has proved herself, a dedicated and thorough Indian, upholding patriotic and human values by her conduct and duty to mother India. Rising above petty party politics,narrow, communal and biased sentiments, Sonia Gandhi has always taken a just and humantarian stand for the good of the people. While there is no end to criticism, it is on record that she herself, in the interest of the nation had denouncd the Prime Ministership which was her legitimte right. On her 64th Birthday, we wish her good luck and long life.

Shame on Indians for calling Sonia their mother. Can`t you guys find anybody to lead India from your 1 billion or so population. It is truly insulting for all those Indians with talent to be ignored and have an Italian Mafia rule the congress party.
Good luck losers.
